History:
Numerous dogs have contributed to the development of
the Norwich Terrier. It is thought that during the late half of the
nineteenth century near Cambridge
England a small Irish Terrier was crossed with the
Yorkshire Terrier to produce a small red and often black and tan "Cantab"
terrier. From this beginning there were crossing of various other small
terriers who eventually became the Norwich Terrier. In 1932 both prick and
drop-ear types were recognized as the Norwich Terrier. In 1964 the English
Kennel Club divided them into two breeds the Norwich Terrier and the Norfolk
Terrier. The AKC followed the same in 1979. Originally considered a farm dog
and ratter.
